Abstract:In March 1988, Japan's Bridgestone Corporation acquired the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for 2.6 billion dollars. John J. Nevin, Firestone's chairman and CEO, provides this behind-the-scenes look at the events leading up to the merger. Connected to this merger the effects of foreign investment on the USA are discussed and the behaviour of Japanese buyers is analyzed. In Japan disputes are typically resolved either by arbitration, negotiation, or discussions. It is stated that the Japanese have not been as open to foreign investment as it is in their interest to be. Firestone shareholders benefited from the merger.
