Abstract: | A model is developed for North-South trade. The North exports high-quality and the South exports low-quality industrial products. The model is described in a mathematical form. Assumptions include a homogeneous and a vertically differentiated product. New patterns of trade dynamics are predicted. Faster technical progress in the southern industrial sector leads the North to introduce new high-quality products and the South to abandon low-quality products. Production of northern low-quality products is shifted to the South. Income distribution effects are analyzed. Results of population growth and technical progress are outlined. Intertemporal shifts in intraindustry and intersectorial trade are explained. |
