| Abstract: | There is a belief that protection increases profits. This may be true for import-competing producers of home goods but not for exporters whose production costs (wages + intermediate goods) increase and prices remain intact. More than that: the loss of exporting firms may surpass the gain of home good producers. This was proved by a recent essay of Clements and Sjaastad (1984) and their result is here corroborated by calculations for the US and other industrialised countries based on the Michigan Model of World Production and Trade. |
