Abstract:Because of a lack of evidence, no-one really knows how extensive theft is in economic terms in companies. Employee theft is estimated by the US Government to be 40 billion USD a year. (For street crime only 4 billion USD is estimated.) The aims and methodology of a recent research into this topic is reported. The legal approach to the problem is characterized. Sociological views of the problem are presented in depth. Attitudes of management, trade unions and employees are considered. Using interviews held in printing sector, food industry, retail trade a detailed analysis is given on this phenomenon. Recommendations for minimising theft and possible solutions are given too.
