Abstract:The article is based on studies of household energy consumption. The amount of cooking fuel used per household does not vary substantially with household income. However, higher incomes are associated with a larger share of modern fuels in total cooking fuel consumption and, as these fuels are more efficient than traditional fuels, a higher level of energy services. The comparison of household energy patterns indicates that householders are responsive to the prices of household fuels, including their supply reliability and the investment cost of the cooking device. Prices of fuels appear to influence the mix of fuels used. The switch from wood as income rises suggests that wood is not a fuel favoured by customers.
