Abstract:Although being a relatively new product, aluminium has nevertheless been confronted a slow down in the world demand over the last fifteen years. A trend of a downturn of traditional production areas has also been observed. A complete shut down of existing capacities in some countries of Western Europe, following the example of Japan, has even been brought about. Many recent improvements of market conditions are reported. The trend toward reduction of primary aluminium production capacities in the USA and Europe has been stopped, several firms have increased their financial performance. Decisions to add new capacities have been made in France, for which two scenarios of aluminium industry are presented until 2010.
