Abstract: | There is considerable debate about the merits of the methods used to extract knowledge from human experts in order to develop a knowledge base for the system and about how to best mimic the reasoning and cognitive processes by which experts solve a particular problem. A survey was conducted to find out the characteristics of R and D (research and development) information systems. A comprehensive picture of the applications of artificial intelligence expert systems in R and D has been obtained. It has been shown among others that run-time performance was poor, there was lack of compatibility and lack of integration with conventional computer systems. |
