Abstract: | However similar the pressures exerted on the world's labour markets by economic development and technical change, country-specific features are surprisingly persistent. A proposed typology based on the distinction between "occupational labour markets" and "internal labour markets" is shown to capture a broad range of the country variation in such areas as recruitment and training practices, job demarcation, employee mobility and collective bargaining. Empirical data on labour markets in Great Britain and France lend support to the proposed model, whose implications for policy-makers are also considered. |
