Abstract:Over the past two years, business academics and senior managers have begun talking about the notion of the learning organization. The concepts of adaptive learning and generative learning are explained. The traditional view of leaders is criticized. Three new roles of leaders are described and analyzed: 1. leaders as designers; 2. leaders as teachers; 3. leaders as stewards. It is shown that new leadership roles require new skills in building shared vision; surfacing and testing mental models; systems thinking. Developing these skills requires new tools: systems archetypes, charting strategic dilemmas, exercises which reveal assumptions etc.. One of the most promising new tools is the learning laboratory: constructed microcosms of real life settings.
