Abstract:During the next decade, image-processing "telecomputers" will not only receive but also store, manipulate, create and transmit digital videoprogramming. Cellular telephony and other mobile communications will open up to everyone. These breakthroughs will spring from the "telecosm", a domain of reality governed by the action of electromagnetic waves. These technologies will transform commerce. Managers, workers and costumers will interact directly, not only through words and numbers but also visual data, from three-dimensional simulations to high-definition films. However, the old wiring threatens to hold back what people and boxes can do. The technological solution of this bottleneck is a system of fiber-optic cables.
