Abstract:In 1990, taxpayers in the USA had access for the first time to a service that could electronically transmit their tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service, provide a receipt, and thus reduce the wait for refund checks by three or four weeks. This electronic integration initiative has not only changed the procedure for sending tax returns, it has also changed the entire basis of competition in the tax preparation marketplace. The players and their roles before and after electronic integration are defined. Some ways to exploit the new opportunities are suggested. The tax return preparation field is only one example of the numerous areas that will be changing under the influence of electronic integration.
