Abstract:3 M has regionalized O.U.S. (outside-the-U.S.) product development centres for virtually every important European market area. These maximise the return from R and D within a geographic region and particular product area, and help to overcome individual subsidiaries' tendencies to become provincial. A key to their successful operation has been local leadership. 3M is committed to locating laboratory sites wherever the product or technology driving forces exist. Key to sharing information with the subsidiaries is to make it clear to them which information is proprietary and which information can be shared with customers and vendors.
