Abstract:USA R and D consortia were studied to tell about how to manage consortia for maximum success? Several rules were identified for effective consortia, including: 1. Establish strong commitments to the consortium. 2. Implement strong decision controls. 3. Establish a strong charter before initiating the consortium etc. Lack of managerial patience was found to be the most prevalent problem in view of the fact that consortia take more than five years to return any benefits to their members. Professional reluctance to partner was the second, and the failure to let go was the third most common problem. One of the most difficult aspects of building consortia is finding and selecting suitable partners.
