Abstract:The increasing foreign ownership of USA assets has been causing serious concern among many Americans. Such ownership, to them, poses a threat to America's national security, if not to its political and economic sovereignty. Yet, even if foreign ownership of USA assets were substantially higher than American assets abroad, it should not be a matter of serious concern. Much of the inflows of foreign capital have been adding to the domestic capital stock, significantly contributing to the American standard of living and enhancing the country's ability to service its international indebtedness. Thus, the benefits of foreign investment appear to far outweigh the costs in an increasingly interdependent world.
