Abstract:A line segmentation problem /LSP/ in a multistage, multimachine production system is addressed. The system can produce several types of circuit boards because each production stage consists of multiple identical machines. The items produced are categorized into families based on their component and processing requirements. Items belonging to the same family share the common major setup, while switching over from one family to another requires a major setup. The LSP determines an allocation of machines at each production stage to families so as to minimize the time to complete all jobs. The resulting segmentation of a line constitutes mini-lines within a line. In each mini-line, only items of in a family are produced.
