Abstract:A major shipping line lets customers to connect to its distributed wide area workstation network throughout the USA, giving them instant service for up-to-the-minute information on the status of cargo, billing and booking. That is the case at Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. /MOL/ in New York City. The wide area customer service system is based on a T1 backbone linking seven Sun servers and 17 remote sites that track cargo from bookings to delivery for 250 agents and thousands of customers. The MOL system actually consists of several existing databases plus two currently set up: a database of profiles of past customers, a schedule database, a booking system, a documentation database, an equipment control module, a customer requests system.
