Abstract:The regulation of financial institutions has become a growth industry, not so much because the finance sector in many countries (apart from banking) has been growing rapidly, but for two other reasons. One is the expanding freedom of financial markets, including the progressive relaxation of restrictions on the types of business which financial institutions can undertake. The second immediate cause of the proliferation of financial regulations is regulation itself.
