Abstract:Hewlett-Packard's aggressive moves toward open system are taking resources away from its proprietary mini, the MPE-based HP 3000. HP 3000 model 900 is described and key specifications are given. Under pressure to cut expenses, the company is being forced to reduce research and development on some HP 3000 technologies. As a result, some users are feeling abandoned. HP is pursuing open systems, and many users have little immediate interest in migrating to open technologies such as NewWave or SQL. Some users accused HP of turning its back on longtime 3000 users with an open-system bid to appeal to potential new customers.
