Abstract:Health food products are defined as those which have a specific health angle rather than those which are simply healthy. There are new few foods which are only available through healthfood shops and not through either chemists' or grocers'. The number of specialist healthfood outlets continues to grow, though the rate is slowing due to competition from the conventional food retailing network. Specialist outlets were estimated to turn over GBP 270 million in 1989. Food lines still account for 59 percent of health stores' estimated turnover. Health stores now account for only 35 percent of total sales. The total dietary supplement of herbal remedies market was worth GBP 84 million in 1989. A fast-growing area is fish oils.
