Abstract: | A historical and descriptive analysis of the Family Crisis Shelter /FCS/ in Hawaii is presented within the context of the battered women's movement. FCS has kept its feminist program, and continues to promote societal change despite its financing by governmental and conventional funding sources. Its success is largely due to its strategy of feminist empowerment, which mainly depends on the use of former residents as staff and its policy of providing battered women with nonjudgmental support. |
