Abstract:Recent changes have renewed interest in the influence of public policy on labour relations. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the overall influence of the Wagner Act /NLRA/, "Event study" methodology is used focusing on the impact of specific provisions of the law. The events surrounding the passage of the NLRA are discussed. Mean market returns and mean return for a sample of 75 firms are contrasted. Changes in shareholder wealth are considered a measure of the shift in the balance of power, and statistically and economically significant decline is found in shareholder wealth for the sampled firms. It is concluded that the NLRA profoundly altered the industrial relations in the USA.
