Abstract:It is difficult to overstate the extent to which most managers believe in the redemptive power of rewards, A. Kohn argues in 'Why incentive plans cannot work' in this magazin's issue of september/october 1993. In Kohn's view, the failure of any given incentive program is due less to a glitch in that program than to the inadequacy of the psychological assumptions that ground all such plans. According to Kohn, incentives in the workplace simply cannot work. Experts consider the role of rewards in the workplace. Kohn responds on these commentaries.
