Abstract:This paper examines ways in which political barriers inhibit the formulation and implementation of sustainable tourism development (hereafter as: s-t-d.) in small-island developing states using North Cyprus as an example.
Drawing on in-depth interviews and participant observation of significant actors in the tourism sector, the findings suggest that comprehending society's political system and power structure is the key to understanding s-t-d. policy development, planning and implementation.
In the case of North Cyprus, policy development was found to be a product of political influence, particularly the use of public resources as an instrument for political power, retention and that the public sector's politicisation is the underlying cause of the weakened progress in s-t-d. etc.
