Abstract:The Italian market for hi-fi audio equipment is examined. Products covered are hi-fi equipment and accessories, compact disc players and music centres. As household penetration levels of hardware have increased there has been a gradual shift in consumer spending within the home entertainment market towards software. Data are presented showing that the Italian consumer electronics industry has been in deepening crisis since the beginning of the eighties and can now only compete in both the domestic and international markets in the production of televisions. Sales data are presented by market sectors for 1984-1988. Market shares of brands and manufacturers are described. The systems of retail distribution are identified.
