Abstract: | Prior to the Bhopal tragedy, Union Carbide had a solid health, safety and environmental (HS and E) record. Bhopal destroyed that record. At corporate level, a new HS and E Affairs committee of the board was established. The main task was to establish the company's global HS and E standards. Safety improvements were introduced by numerous operating changes. Today, HS and E standards are integrated requirements. A plan for the green at the company to achieve progress toward environmental excellence was set up: reducing air emissions, reducing wastewater discharges, handling and reducing process waste, reducing spills and incidents. |
