Abstract:Using pooled register data from Norway and Sweden, it is found that differences in unemployment (hereafter as: unempl.) duration patterns reflect dissimilarities in unempl. insurance (UI) systems in a way convincingly establishing the link btw. economic incentives and job search behaviour. Especially, UI benefits are relatively more generous for low-income (as: l-inc.) workers in Sweden than in Norway, leading to relatively longer unempl. spells for l-inc. workers in Sweden. Based on the variation of replacement ratios in between countries, it is found that the elasticity of the outflow rate from insured unempl. as to the replacement ratio is appr. one in Norway and 0.5 in Sweden.
