Abstract:Households in Norway went through a major change as the advent of North Sea oil revenues brought about an increase in household earnings and spending power. The shift from farming toward manufacturing and services caused an internal migration to the west of the country. In the 1990s the country faces a number of challenges affecting its scope as a consumer market. The country now faces tough competition in the international market, and a prospect of deep cuts in its living standard, and this is bound to feed into the retail industry before long. Demographic development, household structure, consumer expenditure and habits are overviewed, and several tables containing statistical figures are shown.
