Abstract:The lessons to be learned from the Chrysler bail-out are explored and there are implications for labour, management, government and financial and social institutions. The narrow goals of the rescue were served and Chrysler was saved, but doubt remains as to whether it was the best response to the problems. There is attemption to generalize from the Chrysler experience. There is no "neutral" system, but rather an intricate network of laws and institutions that sets the terms of economic choice. Both bail-out and bankruptcy are social interventions.
