Abstract: | Economics dominates public policy, and every country's chief executive regards his or her macroeconomic adviser as a vital aid. But economics has almost no influence on business policy, and in only a small minority of companies does the chief executive have an economic adviser at all. The dominant tradition in industrial organization has been based on the strongly empirical structure - conduct - performance paradigm; some historical works supporting this idea are cited. The development of business strategy is reviewed based on the economics literature. New industrial economics, the uses of economic models in business, and the outlook for the future of economics in business are discussed. |
