Abstract: | It is argued in this paper that airline (hereafter as: ar-l./ar-ls.) alliances' (as: all./alls.) development depends on ar-ls.' resource configurations, being furthermore a function of environmental constraints forcing certain types of ar-ls. into certain choices. In this study, a dual theoretical approach is used. On one hand, the positioning of ar-ls. in the all. environment is examined using a resource dependence perspective. The second perspective taken is that of institutional theory. Based mainly on interviews with senior ar-l. management, it is aimed to understand the institutionalisation of alls., or how managerial perceptions drive the building of alls. The paper is concluded with the discussion of a model depicting the factors influencing the development of multilateral alls. btw. autonomous, but interdependent firms. |
