Abstract:The article introduces a "facilitated access" model to describe how locals make and have made use of tourism. Using travel accounts from Ottoman Empire in 1835-1870, the process and reasons of Ottoman subjects' adaptation of tourism services and expertise to the Western tourists of the era are analyzed. The study suggests that the Western tourism boomed in the period before 1869 because some Ottoman subjects were able to as a result increase their own autonomy.
