Abstract:This paper aims to discuss the nature of contemporary work related to knowledge (hereafter as: knwl.) worker. It is agreed that the value to organizations of workers possessing knwl. is increasing but that the nature of the knwl. worker is unclear within current literature. It is acknowledged there to be a high level of knwl. in contemporary work etc. It is argued that there are four tensions running through the literature as to the issue. The elements comprising knwl. work are proposed to fall into three groups: knwl. possession, knwl. activity and knwl. context. It is proposed that knwl. work should not be automatically associated with service work or new forms of work. The nature of knwl. work cannot be defined by one specific attribute etc.
