Abstract:Even though an acid rain game where the countries respond to transboundary depositions of sulphur by adjusting their domestic emissions has been modeled long ago, the numerous attempts to model Kuznets curves for sulphur emissions have ignored the transboundary depositions. However, there are various examples of European countries where the domestic depositions are smaller than the contribution from foreign emissions. Using long panel data of sulphur emissions for Europe, the paper demonstrates that accounting for transboundary emissions clearly changes the environmental Kuznets curve. In addition, the authors present other model characterized by a spatial lag in which countries track changes in the per capita emissions characteristics of their neighbours irrespective of their per capita income levels.
