Abstract:This paper aims to provide a comprehensive empirical appraisal of the nature, extent and sources of variety in innovation (here as: var-in-inn. for 'innovation' as: inn.) in industries across Europe. Particularly, the analysis focuses on the relative importance of sector-specific, context-specific and firm-size factors in driving firms' inn. behaviours and performances. Using a unique database (SIEPI) containing data drawn by the 2nd Community Innovation Survey (CIS2) for 10 countries, 22 manufacturing sectors and three firm-size classes, the analysis looks beyond the Eurostat sectoral aggregate statistics, exploring in detail the differences in inn. processes both within and across European countries and manufacturing industries. In addition, the SIEPI material has been used to identify the determinants of the var-in-inn.
