Abstract:That the free market is good and competition healthy is an orthodox contemporary view. Yet although all marketers will agree that monopolies are a bad thing, many would happily corner as much of the market as possible for their own companies. After all, squeezing out the opposition can make things much easier for a business. Who needs rivals if you can offer both premium and discount brands in a sector, thereby sewing it up for yourself?
