Abstract:When trying to discover the cause of the global financial crisis, bankers, regulators, policy-makers and scholars have been mostly overlooking leadership. This is suggested to be strange, given the attention commanded by the subject during the past 30 years. Drawing on the author's experience in executive search and analysing critically the lessons proposed by the U.K's inquiry into bank governance, it is argued that common ways of leading and of thinking about leadership helped cause this crisis, being already contributing to the next. While some scholars have offered important and relevant critiques, the dominant discourse on leadership stays dangerously without distraction.
