Abstract:An assessment of the existing body of knowledge in international business suggests that a satisfying and generalizable theory is still missing. The partist and particularly the eclectic paradigm are critically examined. It is shown that the latter provides a rich and robust framework explaining international business activities, but at the same time it seems to have failed solving the integration problem. The integration problem of the eclectic approach could be overcome by shifting to the GAINS (Gestalts of International Business Strategies) paradigm. This is designed as a holistic, process-oriented, dynamic contingency approach which relies on longitudinal quantitative analysis of international business activities.
