Abstract:Guidelines for choosing the projects, selecting system shells, gaining top management support, and integrating expert systems with the whole R&D information system are provided. Since artificial intelligence expert systems (AI/ES) accounted for the majority of future applications in the R&D, an exploratory survey was conducted of how AI/ES systems were being used, or being envisioned for future applications, in R&D. Some general rules are listed that should govern the choice of problems for expert system development. It is pointed out, e.g. that expert system development only proceeds to fruition if it gets by the feasibility stage, during which the costs of the expert system are weighed against the benefits.
