Abstract: | This article deals with the internal organisational structures of firms from a transaction cost perspective. After outlining the shortcomings of previous research and defining some basic terms (such as internal transaction, internal transaction costs), the author characterises two ideal organisational models; the hierarchy-oriented specialisation and the market-oriented decentralisation. Both organisational patterns have their strengths and weaknesses, so that their efficiency depends on the specific conditions in a given situation. Each situation can be characterised by the degree of uncertainty and the potential economies of scale and scope. The higher the degree of uncertainty and the smaller the potential economies of scale and scope, the more efficient the hierarchy-oriented specialisation. |
