Abstract:This paper compares two distinct approaches of corporate environmental management to each other. On the one hand, there are traditional "greening"-concepts of corporate environmental engagement; on the other hand there is a more contemporary "sustaining"-concept which intends to implement the normative idea of Sustainable Development in the sphere of business. Both approaches are analyzed by means of relevant criterias. This leads to some critical empirical reflections about certain interpretations of corporate sustainability in literature as well as business life. In the following, basic elements of the sustaining- concept are analyzed and relevant conclusions for reshaping managerial functions and processes are drawn. The ideas conclude with a perspective on the future research agenda for sustainable corporate environmental management.
