Abstract:The Agriculture Research Division (ARD) of the American Cyanamid Company has been practicing the basics for 20 years and this has been the key to their success. The definition of basics implies that accountability will only be applied to those things over which the manager personally has control. To make sure one isn't held accountable for a problem, one must write lots of memos covering one's tracks. One can devise a cover-up system where one is never accountable for anything. To avoid these problems define accountability so that circumstances, excuses and causes are not part of accountability. It is concluded that accountability is the cornerstone of the basics that ARD uses in its approach to management.
