Abstract: | The core problem of strategic management (in a market economy) can be seen in creating the bases of sustainable rents. Since the early eighties, the perspective of industrial organization theory, referring to industry structure and, thus, external factors, has dominated the discussion. During the last years, however, the resource based approach has been developed - partially as an explicit counterposition to the industrial organization research. From the perspective of the resource based approach, differences in competitively valuable resources within firms - and therefore internal factors - are the origin of sustainable rents. Subject of this article is the presen- tation of the fundamental ideas of the resource based approach as well as the analysis of the consequences. |
