Abstract:Mentoring is an important form of support for managers but until now most research on mentoring has been US- based and has focused on the value to the individual rather than the organisation. This paper explores the organisational benefits of informal mentoring. It discusses the differences between a formal and an informal approach and the relative merits of each. For example, formal mentoring requires monitoring and intervention, while an informal approach has no explicit framework but may allow a more sustainable relationship. The authors used a case study to ascertain managers' views of the benefits of informal mentoring to an organisation.
