Abstract:International strategies vary in their potential to exploit and increase a firm's resources, specifically its knowledge base. Resource-based analysis suggests that the diverse entry modes would be clustered in terms of their exploitation and augmentation characteristics. This study introduces a new categorization of entry modes, basing on their potential to increase the resources of an entrant. The antecedents of these modes are explored, and testable propositions advanced delimiting for which firms and in which circumstances each mode maximizes long-term value creation. The resource-based framework complementing transaction-cost-based frameworks is outlined.
