Abstract:This article examines the differences in the effects of strategic change in resource allocation on company performance in inside CEO versus outside CEO -led companies. By examining longitudinal data on 193 CEO tenures during the years 1993-1998, it is found that as the level of strategic change increases from slight to moderate, the effect on firm performance is positive, whereas when the level of strategic change increases from moderate to great, the company performance declines. Both of these effects seem to be stronger for firms led by outside CEOs. Research also indicates that this difference related to the outside/inside origin of the CEO exists only in the later years of the CEO's tenure.
