Abstract:In 2001 the world economy was in recession. During the year, however, the main factors that had led to the slump turned around. Growth in the US will accelerate over 2002 reflecting the substantial stimulus from both monetary and fiscal policies. The recovery in the US will continue and will increasingly have a positive impact on the other industrial countries, not only, by an increase of exports into the US but also via the business sentiment and the financial markets. In Western Europe, the economy is expected to pick up vigorously in spring, and in Japan a return to positive growth is projected for the second half of this year. Next year, growth in the industrial countries will start to flatten as the economic environment, particularly monetary policy, will become less stimulative (original in German).
