Abstract: | In recent months, the world economy has lost momentum partly due to the adverse impact of an increasing probability of war with Iraq. While growth decelerated in all major industrial countries, economic activity remained robust in Asian emerging market economies and in Central and Eastern Europe. Against the background of a faltering recovery, the central banks in the industrial countries continued to lower their interest rates. Fiscal policy is stimulative in the United States and the United Kingdom, and broadly neutral in Euroland and Japan. The forecast assumes that there shortly will be a military intervention in Iraq. As the direct costs will be small relative to the size of the economy in any event, there will be no military spending boom in the United States (original in German). |
