Abstract:The author compares the movement toward globalisation in the late 19th century with that of the 20th century. The paper notes one aspect of present day globalisation - the increasing participation of developing countries in world trade, capital and labour markets has been made possible by a consensus on trade, debt and macroeconomics to which Corden made seminal contributions. To the question of whether globalization is in danger, the author provides an answer that it is not in danger, since the forces that undermined the first wave of globalisation are weaker than they were in the interwar years while the positive forces behind globalisation today are stronger.
