Abstract:The big rating agencies have long played a part in regulating the US securities markets. It's been the source of much of their wealth. But now they are running scared that the SEC might try to formalize that role. Last December a little-noticed lawsuit was wound up in a district court in Manhattan. Layers representing creditors of the defunct US airline Pan Am had been pursuing information about Delta Air Lines' decision to withdraw from a bid in 1993.
