Abstract:The paper analyzes the reasons for the closing-down of AEG- Corporation, one of the most prestigious German corporations of the early twentieth century. First, a short history of AEG is given. Then the reasons why Daimler-Benz could never get AEG out of the red are analyzed. They cannot be found in bad strategic planning, but have to be sought in inadequate strategic management. The organization structure as well as post merger management did not permit to realize the synergies that have been expected. The simple lesson to be learned is that good planning is not enough. It has to be understood by everyone in the organization, and it has to be accepted by everyone. This requires an adequate strategic organization of the merged companies, treatment of the subsidiary as a strategic partner.
